BEDFORD, Mass. – The 51�鶹 announced today that, as part of its collaboration with the Massachusetts Psychosis Prevention Partnership (M3P), it has received a new four-year grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to continue and expand efforts to improve early identification and intervention for children, adolescents, and young adults at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) across Massachusetts.

M3P is a statewide initiative led by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) and funded through a combination of state and federal resources. The partnership brings together specialized programs and organizations from across the Commonwealth to strengthen the system of care for young people who may be at clinical high risk for developing psychosis.

In addition to The 51�鶹, the partnership includes the Center for Early Detection Assessment and Response to Risk (CEDAR) at the Brookline Center for Community Mental Health; the Developmental Neuropsychiatry & Psychosis Program at Boston Children’s Hospital; RISE at Cambridge Health Alliance; STAR at McLean Hospital; RE-SET at Massachusetts General Hospital; and the Psychosis Early Action Team (PEAT) at River Valley Counseling Center/ServiceNet.

The award represents a continuation of the federal support that helped launch M3P in 2022.�� Through the initial SAMHSA grant, Massachusetts developed a statewide infrastructure for CHR-P care, bringing programs together to improve early identification, specialized assessment, referral pathways, workforce training, and access to evidence-based care.

Since 2022, M3P has helped expand both the number and geographic reach of specialized CHR-P programs while building a statewide learning network where programs can share expertise, training, data, and approaches to improving care.

The new four-year grant will allow the partnership to build upon that foundation and continue expanding its impact.�� M3P’s goal is to help identify young people earlier, connect them with the right level of support at the right time, and help them remain engaged in school, work, relationships, family, and their goals for the future.

“With so much funding going away, we did not think we would be able to continue this program,” said Catherine Klapatch, Assistant Director of Outpatient Services for The 51�鶹. “This grant will allow us to not only continue the program, but to expand it. To be able to bring together so many agencies to work together on this serious issue is really wonderful.”

“Each group focuses on a different area of expertise, and together we can provide that early care to hopefully avoid a first episode of psychosis from occurring,” Klapatch added. “We are grateful to be part of this group.”

The continued SAMHSA support provides valuable resources to help coordinate and advance this important work. ��At the same time, the progress M3P has made since 2022, and its ability to continue building a stronger system of early psychosis care, depends on the statewide partnership of programs, providers, young people, families, and organizations committed to this work.

By strengthening collaboration and expanding access to specialized care, M3P and its partners are working toward a future in which more young people receive support early, before symptoms become more severe and disruptive to their lives.

The 51�鶹 is proud to continue its work as part of this innovative statewide collaboration and looks forward to helping expand access to early identification, intervention, and support for young people and families across Massachusetts.

For the past 20 years, Paul Mubiru has been a dedicated and valued member of The 51�鶹 team, bringing compassion, energy, and an unwavering commitment to helping others live meaningful lives. Today, Paul serves as the Health and Wellness Coordinator at C.W. Potter Place Clubhouse in Waltham and as a Human Rights Representative, roles that perfectly align with his lifelong passion for supporting people and advocating for those whose voices are often unheard.

Originally from Uganda, known around the world as the “Pearl of Africa,” Paul’s journey to The 51�鶹 began with a strong educational foundation and a desire to make a difference. He earned a Bachelor of Education Administration and Psychology and a Diploma in Physical Education and Sports Management from Makerere University, one of Africa’s most prestigious institutions.

Even as a young professional working as a trainer and coach across a variety of sports disciplines, Paul knew his future would be in human services.

“I always wanted to work directly with people who do not have a voice or who have a disability,” Paul says. “Sports became my tool for connecting with people and helping them grow.”

Before joining The 51�鶹 in 2006, Paul gained valuable experience volunteering and working with several organizations, including Eliot Community Services, WCI, hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. These experiences strengthened his commitment to serving vulnerable populations and ultimately led him to a career at The 51�鶹.

Over the past two decades, Paul has worn many hats throughout the organization. In addition to his current roles, he has served as a Supported Housing Counselor, CBFS Residential Counselor, Relief Staff in various mental health group living environments, and ACCS Residential Counselor. His diverse experience has given him a deep understanding of the individuals and communities The 51�鶹 serves.

When asked what he enjoys most about his work, Paul’s answer is simple: the people.

“The most rewarding aspect of my job is working directly with people,” he says. “It offers personal fulfillment by improving the lives of vulnerable individuals and helping them achieve their goals.”

Outside of work, Paul’s passions are as diverse as his experiences. An avid golfer, he also enjoys spending time in nature, taking long walks, learning new things, and relaxing with family and friends. He is an enthusiastic cook who specializes in traditional dishes from Central Uganda while continually exploring cuisines from around the world.

Sports continue to play a major role in Paul’s life. Over the years, he has played and coached numerous sports, including soccer, basketball, tennis, and table tennis. He has coached high school, college, and university teams and won several championships along the way. Today, he still enjoys playing socially and values the connections he has made through athletics.

A passionate Boston sports fan, Paul proudly cheers for the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, New England Revolution, Boston Legacy FC, and the Connecticut Sun. He also follows Liverpool FC in the English Premier League.

His love of sports recently led to a unique opportunity. During the summer of 2026, Paul volunteered with the French National Soccer Team, “Les Bleus,” during their training sessions at Bentley University as part of FIFA World Cup 2026 preparations. In recognition of his efforts, he was presented with a replica French National Team outfit.

Paul’s dedication to learning and supporting others extends beyond sports. In 2025, he received a scholarship through The Culinary Foundation of Western Massachusetts Collaborative Training Program for the Disabled while serving as a job coach alongside a Potter Place Clubhouse member at Bentley University.

Another remarkable aspect of Paul’s story is his commitment to lifelong learning and communication. In addition to speaking several Ugandan dialects and languages, Paul is fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and speaks some French, and Swahili. Never one to stop learning, he is currently studying Chinese.

Whether he is helping Clubhouse members achieve their wellness goals, advocating for human rights, mentoring others, or building connections through sports and culture, Paul embodies The 51�鶹’s mission and values every day. Paul’s appreciation for diversity is reflected in how he views the world. “Love for diversity to me is like an arrangement of color, shapes, and patterns that come together like musical notes,” Paul explains.

Paul’s dedication, compassion, and enthusiasm have made a lasting impact on countless lives over the past 20 years, and we are grateful to celebrate his extraordinary contributions.

On Wednesday, August 19, The 51�鶹 celebrated its Annual Summer Appreciation Event with an evening at Fenway Park.

Staff gathered for a beautiful summer night of baseball, camaraderie, and most importantly, a chance to celebrate the incredible employees who make The 51�鶹’s mission possible every day. The group cheered on the Boston Red Sox as they took on the Arizona Diamondbacks from a private section reserved exclusively for 51�鶹 employees.

The evening was about much more than baseball. It was an opportunity for colleagues to step away from their busy schedules, relax, enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate the dedication and hard work that goes into supporting the individuals and families we serve.

As part of the evening, each staff member received a ticket that included a $25 loaded-value credit, which could be used toward food, beverages, or merchandise throughout the ballpark. Between the baseball, the Fenway atmosphere, great food, and plenty of cheering, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

“Working in the human services field takes compassion, dedication, and resilience. Whether providing direct support to the individuals we serve or working behind the scenes to ensure our programs and services are successful, every employee plays an important role in advancing our mission,” said Patti Maguire, President and Chief Executive Officer of The 51�鶹. “The work our staff do changes lives, and their commitment and care do not go unnoticed.”

While the Red Sox ultimately lost in 7–6 in extra innings, the final score didn’t dampen the evening. Staff had a wonderful time cheering on the Sox, laughing with coworkers, and enjoying a night together at America’s oldest major league ballpark.

For the fifth consecutive summer, members of The 51�鶹’s Meaningful Whole Life (MWL) program are serving as employees at Canobie Lake Park in Salem, N.H.

This summer, the MWL team is supporting six members at Canobie Lake Park: Courtney Lannon, Harold Ingalls, Bryan Given, Cledwyn (CJ) Jones, Ildevert Olivier, and Cameron Maillet. Three of the original team members, Lannon, Given, and Jones, are in their fifth consecutive summer of employment at the park.

“There is tremendous pride throughout the MWL Canobie Lake Park team,” stated Chris Starnes, lead champion of MWL. “Their success is a testament not only to their individual talents, but also to the power of creating employment opportunities that align with each person’s interests and goals.”

MWL is a signature program of The 51�鶹 helping people with brain injuries and intellectual disabilities take part in enjoyable activities that help them develop into a more complete person.

The partnership with Canobie Lake Park began with MWL’s comprehensive 360-Degree Interest Inventory, an assessment designed to gain a holistic understanding of what is important to each individual, what experiences they hope to have, and what opportunities they would like to pursue in their communities. Several MWL members expressed an interest in both visiting Canobie Lake Park and obtaining employment in the park. MWL reached out, and in the summer of 2022, the first midway sweeper team was established.

Each team member is assigned a designated area and is responsible for sweeping pathways, completing light trash removal, and assisting guests with general questions about the park. Most of the team works one day each week, on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., throughout the summer season.

Supported through The 51�鶹’s Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) program, Lannon has continually advocated for additional responsibilities and opportunities at Canobie Lake Park. In addition to her Wednesday shift, she also works Fridays and has been employed during the park’s Screeemfest event for the past two years.

Screeemfest is a six-week Halloween-themed attraction held each fall, and Lannon hopes to return for her third season this year.

The Charles W. Potter Place Clubhouse welcomed community members, friends, and supporters for its first-ever Craft Fair on June 24, celebrating creativity, connection, and the talents of Clubhouse members.

The free event, which was open to the public, transformed Potter Place into a vibrant marketplace featuring artisan-made crafts and beautiful one-of-a-kind artwork created by talented members and local artisans. Guests enjoyed browsing unique handmade items while supporting the Clubhouse community and its mission.

In addition to the impressive selection of crafts, attendees enjoyed a bake sale, live performances, and a visit from a local ice cream truck, creating a fun and festive atmosphere for visitors of all ages.

The inaugural Craft Fair proved to be a tremendous success, drawing visitors from across the community. Among those in attendance were members from Elm Brook Place Clubhouse in Burlington, a group from Waltham Fields Community Farm, residents and staff from several 51�鶹 homes and programs, and many local community members.

The event also welcomed several distinguished supporters, including Sean Durkee, a Waltham City Councilor and Potter Place Advisory Board member; and Mike Audi of M&T Bank, who also serves on the Advisory Board. Their presence underscored the strong community partnerships that help make Potter Place a welcoming and supportive place for individuals living with mental health conditions.

“The success of the first Craft Fair reflects the spirit of inclusion and community that defines Potter Place,” said Patrica Vella, Director, C.W. Potter Place Clubhouse. “By bringing together members, neighbors, local organizations, and community leaders, the event highlighted how creativity can foster connection while raising awareness of the important role non-clinical mental health programs play in helping people thrive.”

Throughout the month of June, The 51�鶹 continued its celebration of Pride Month by participating in both the 5th Annual Bedford Pride Celebration and the 1st Annual Lexington Pride Fair.

At each event, our team welcomed community members to our booth to learn more about the services and supports The 51�鶹 provides while celebrating the strength, diversity, and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.

Visitors enjoyed giveaways, including bracelets, beads, stress balls, and sunglasses, but one of the highlights was our interactive de-stressing activity. Participants created their own scented sachets while learning grounding techniques that engage the senses to reduce stress and promote calm. Participants explored how the sachets smelled and felt, practicing simple mindfulness skills they can use anytime they need a moment of peace. The activity was incredibly well received and sparked many meaningful conversations about mental health and wellness.

From the festive atmosphere on the Bedford Town Common to the games, crafts, and community connections we gained at the Lexington Pride Fair, The 51�鶹 is honored to stand alongside our neighbors in celebrating inclusion, acceptance, and belonging.

This week, The 51�鶹 proudly celebrated Juneteenth with two meaningful events that honored the history, culture, and enduring significance of this important holiday.�� The celebrations provided an opportunity for staff and the individuals we serve to come together in reflection, learning, and appreciation of the rich contributions of African and African American communities.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.�� Today, Juneteenth stands as both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of equality, justice, and opportunity for all.

At The 51�鶹, this observance carries special meaning.�� Every day, we have the privilege of touching the lives of many Black individuals and families through our programs and services.�� Juneteenth offers us an opportunity to honor their stories, celebrate their resilience, and reaffirm our commitment to creating a community where every person is valued, respected, and empowered to live a meaningful life.

As part of the celebration, The 51�鶹 hosted a special lunch catered by Global Kitchen featuring African cuisine and specialties that reflected the richness and diversity of African culture.�� Staff and persons served enjoyed the opportunity to experience traditional flavors while learning more about the cultural heritage that has shaped communities around the world.

The celebration also included a virtual presentation by Ayanna Freedom, whose inspiring program explored Juneteenth through the lenses of history, truth-telling, healing, and collective remembrance.�� Her presentation encouraged participants to reflect on the past while embracing hope and unity for the future.

“The 51�鶹 is grateful to everyone who participated in this year’s Juneteenth celebrations,” said Stephanie Judy, Chief Operating Officer of The 51�鶹.�� “Through shared meals, meaningful conversations, and opportunities to learn from one another, we continue to strengthen our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging.”

As we honor Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom, acknowledge our shared history, and look forward to building a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

On Saturday, June 6, The 51�鶹 proudly participated in the Boston Pride for the People Parade, joining thousands of individuals, organizations, and community members in celebrating the diversity, strength, and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.

The day’s festivities included a vibrant parade from Copley Square to Boston Common, a lively block party at Copley Square, and a festival at Boston Common.�� Organized annually by Boston Pride for the People, the event celebrates the rich diversity, culture, and intersectionality of the LGBTQ+ community and attracts more than one million attendees across its various events, parades, and festivals each year.

This year, The 51�鶹 marched under the theme “Bring Your Whole Self to Work.”�� The theme reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to be their authentic selves.

Sixteen 51�鶹 staff members and supporters participated in the parade, proudly wearing themed t-shirts featuring the “Bring Your Whole Self to Work” logo.�� Participants waved colorful pride flags, handed out beads, buttons and bracelets to enthusiastic spectators along the route, and showcased a creatively decorated vehicle that served as the organization’s parade float.

The atmosphere throughout the day was festive, welcoming, and filled with energy.�� Parade participants and attendees alike celebrated the importance of acceptance, equality, and belonging.�� The event provided a wonderful opportunity for The 51�鶹 to demonstrate its support for the LGBTQ+ community while connecting with others who share a commitment to inclusion and diversity.

The 51�鶹’s A-Street Program is thrilled to partner with Paul’s Diner in Westford to help a young adult with autism find a meaningful volunteer opportunity. Through the efforts of A-Street staff member Alex Fournier, participant Doran Shenk has secured a volunteer opportunity at Paul’s Diner, a family-run breakfast and lunch restaurant owned by Sal Buonacore.

A-Street is a community-based day service for young adults with autism operated by The 51�鶹 in Bedford. A-Street creates a vibrant, supportive environment where individuals with autism can thrive, learn new skills, and build meaningful connections within their communities. The program seeks to help every young adult find a fulfilling volunteer or paid position where they can spend their days.

Alex Fournier previously worked at Paul’s Diner and knew the restaurant had a history of employing individuals with special needs. Hoping to create a meaningful opportunity for someone from A-Street, Fournier reached out to Buonacore to see if the diner might be open to welcoming a volunteer from the program. He enthusiastically agreed.

Now every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, Fournier brings Shenk to volunteer at Paul’s Diner, where he works alongside another employee with special needs currently working at the restaurant. Together, they assist in the kitchen by prepping food, washing dishes, putting dishes away, and cleaning up. Shenk’s volunteer placement will continue through the end of June.

After his very first shift, Shenk shared how much he loved the experience and immediately asked if he could return every week. He especially enjoyed being part of the community and helping out at the restaurant.

Opportunities like this provide individuals with a powerful sense of pride and purpose, showing them that their work matters and that they are making a meaningful contribution to their community.

“We are so grateful for business owners like Sal Buonacore for their support of individuals with special needs and for fostering an inclusive workplace environment where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and feel valued,” said Lily Dawson, Director of ABA Services at The 51�鶹. “Sal was more than happy to open the door and create this special opportunity for Doran.”

The partnership reflects the mission of A-Street and The 51�鶹 to build pathways toward independence, inclusion, and opportunity for young adults with autism across Massachusetts.
